Jesus says, "Follow me"

And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

(Luke 9:59, 61 KJV)

Why do we not blindly follow God with no questions asked?  We see here in two verses that Jesus told two people to follow Him. They both wanted take care of other things before they would.  One man wanted to bury his father and the other wanted to say goodbye to his family and friends.  Is God so cruel that He would not care for the little things?  No.  The point here is that He wants us to follow Him with no reservations…no questions asked…just go!

Last night I was walking my dog late at night, because it’s my job to do so.  Unfortunately, we are in the midst of a serious drought and my yard is extremely cracked. I have a big dog. He’s a boxer that weighs about 78 lbs.  When we walk together I try and steer him around the cracks that would allow his paws to fall in and cause him harm. When he walks with me and he follows my direction everything is fine.  When he tries to pursue his own path and pull away he steps in the cracks and stumbles every time.  He does this only to realize that the path I’m leading is a path of safety…he then resumes following me again.  You would think that he would learn that my path is safe, but he does not. Every day he must stumble before he follows me.

You see, that is the way we are as Christians.  We know that if we just follow God’s path for our lives with no questions asked we will be led safely through life.

…he leadeth me beside the still waters.

(Psalms 23:2 KJV)

But like my boxer it takes us stumbling every time for us to realize that God’s path is the only safe passage.  God will not lead us into the rough waters.  He will lead us through the still waters…the waters that will not pull us down and cause us to drown!  Like my dog…He will not lead us on the path that will cause us harm! All we have to do is FOLLOW HIM!  No questions asked…no putting it off…no saying, “ok, but.”  Eliminate the “buts” from our commitments.  He says, “Follow me” we say, “Yes, Lord!”

Product DescriptionUnlike the negative but well-known precepts of the Old Testament--the Ten Commandments--the commands of Jesus are postitive and relatively overlooked, despite their superb relevance to the challenges people face today. In Come, Follow Me: The Commandments of Jesus, Anthony J. Gittins helps the reader hear Christ's message and live it in everyday life. Gittins explores some of the positive and specific things that Jesus would have the reader do to follow him.

Christians aren't perfect...just forgiven

For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I know not: for not what I would, that do I practice; but what I hate, that I do. But if what I would not, that I do, I consent unto the law that it is good. So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me. For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me, but to do that which is good is not. For the good which I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I practice. But if what I would not, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwelleth in me. I find then the law, that, to me who would do good, evil is present. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me out of the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then I of myself with the mind, indeed, serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

(Rom 7:14-25)

Many years ago when I was in high school I had a bumper sticker that said, “Christians aren’t perfect…just forgiven.”  I thought it was the coolest thing. Ok, yes I was a geek in high school and to prove I will let you know that I placed the bumper sticker on the tube that I stored my competition chess board in.  But none the less, even though I thought I was witnessing and everyone around me knew my faith the true meaning of this never set in until much later in life.

At the age of fifteen I never understood the spiritual battles that were raging inside me. I justified all my actions based upon my initial salvation experience and the fact that I have already received the eternal pardon from my sins.  This belief eventually took me into alcohol and then drug use before I came full circle and began my real relationship with God.

Many Christians find excuses for their behavior. Whether it’s the basic knowledge of their own salvation or even the words of the Appostle Paul.  You see Paul also had struggles with sin just as we have ourselves.  The difference is in how Paul handled his internal battle and the way some of us handle the battle.

Jesus was sinless, but that does not mean that we become sinless ourselves by accepting Him as Lord and Savior. It simply means that we are bought with His blood.  It means that we become sinless in the eyes of God. Don’t get trapped though. It does not give us an eternal pardon for whatever we want to do.  It is because of our salvation experience that we try to live the perfect life with the knowledge that the flesh is weak.  We will stumble it is inevitable you can’t change that, just don’t let it discourage you!  I am proof that if you get discouraged in the fact that you are not living a life of perfection you WILL be drawn deeper and deeper into sin due to your self pity which allows the demonic forces to take hold.  Paul may have written that he can not break away from sin; however, he continues to write:

There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace: because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be: and they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall give life also to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwelleth in you. So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh: for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

(Rom 8:1-14)

God turned His back...

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Mar 15:34

Did God forsake Jesus?  Did He turn His back on His son…our savior?  Yes He did.  Why would God do that?  This was the ninth hour for Jesus at the time He needed God the most and God did that?  Why?

The answer is simpler than you think.  God can not look upon sin.  At this point our sinless Christ hung on the cross and now became sinful.  What?  This is the point in which the sins of all humanity landed on Jesus.  This is the point that he took on the punishment for you and I.  It was here that He died just moments after.

As Christians we come together and celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, but why do we only do this once per year?  Some churches perform the Lord’s Supper at least a couple of times per year.  This is the reason we are Christians.  Without the death and resurrection of Jesus we are nothing but gentiles…outcasts or foreigners of Israel.  We can not worship Yahweh.  We can not commune with the one true God.  I praise God that He gave us His son to be a sacrifice for humanity in order that we could find peace and know the love of God.

This next year I challenge you to not only understand the sacrifice, but to live the sacrifice!  If you were to win the Lotto…how many people would you tell?  How excited would you be?  Jesus is the ultimate Lotto my friend with the odds of winning at infinity to one!  Tell others!  Live like you believe it!  Live because you Love!

$10.91

This book by Gene Edwards presents the crucifixion through the eyes of Jesus.  If you are seeking to understand the sacrifice that was made then I highly recommend this book.  The current price is 22% off the recommended retail price of $13.99

The Holy Trinity made simple

As Christians we have spent a lot of time learning and understanding who Jesus is. We also believe that God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one in the same.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
John 1:1-3
It would be easy to spend hours writing a book on the Holy Trinity and what it means to Christians, but that has been done.  Examples of a couple:

                 $19.50                                                 $16.37
What I would like to discuss is the basics for now not an in depth theology of the subject.  I would highly recommend the two books above in you are looking to study in depth.

The Son:
Jesus is the son of God. We already know that as Christians. We have built our faith on that. We probably know Jesus the most out of the three concepts, but I want you to look at Him in this perspective. Jesus represents the love of God.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16
After reading John 1:1 we discover that Jesus and God are one in the same. This is how God the Father demonstrated His love for us.  We were and are and will always be sinners; however, the price for our sin was paid with the crucifixion of Jesus!  THE SON IS GOD’S LOVE FULLFILLED!!

The Holy Spirit:
Outside the gifts of the spirit we don’t talk about the Holy Spirit much; however, because of the New Testament we understand a little more about the Holy Spirit than we do the Father.  But let’s break down the Spirit into it’s simplest form.
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 1:8
After you accept Christ into your heart you are then baptized my the Holy Ghost. Jesus promised before he ascended up into Heaven that he would be with us always!  We can then look at the Holy Spirit as the ever presence of God in our lives.  He moves through us and if we are sensitive enough and have grown enough then we can feel and know that God is there guiding us through His Holy Spirit.  THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD’S PRESENCE!!

God the Father:
Unfortunately because we have focused so much attention on the love of God we don’t have as great a concept of the Father.  Since the New Testament focuses heavily on the love and presence of God (Jesus and Holy Spirit) we have not looked back at the Old Testament much.  This is where you will find more about God the Father.

The LORD answered, "I will make all my splendor pass before you and in your presence I will pronounce my sacred name. I am the LORD, and I show compassion and pity on those I choose.
Exodus 33:19
Then I will proclaim your righteousness, and I will praise you all day long.
Psalms 35:28

God the Father is a righteous God!  Wow…what does that mean?  God is perfect, almighty, ever present, all knowing!  Looking at the interaction of Moses with God in Exodus we are such sinful creatures that just the mere sight of God would be more than we could handle.  See why we focus more attention on the love and presence of God?  It’s easier to understand and comprehend; however, we need to live our daily lives striving to be more like God.  We need to strive to be righteous.  We can ONLY do that by accepting Jesus as His love and through the Holy Spirit’s presence then and only then we can commune with God the Father.  GOD THE FATHER IS RIGHTEOUSNESS INCARNATE!

Wages of sin

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Romans 6:23

This verse is one of the steps we use in the Roman Road to Salvation.  It is preceded by Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory on God.”  What does that mean really?  We sinned…we aren’t as good as God wants us to be…we don’t live up to the biblical standards of life.  Oooh, how bad.  When we present this to young people and unfortunately adults we down play this to the point of not facing the reality of what it is to sin or more importantly…what the wages really are.  There are countless times when God delivered the wages to people of communities.

Aaron's sons, Nadab and Abihu, each took his fire pan,
put live coals in it, added incense, and presented it to
the LORD. But this fire was not holy, because the LORD
had not commanded them to present it. Suddenly the
LORD sent fire, and it burned them to death there in the
presence of the LORD.
                                           Leviticus 10:1,2

This is just one example of how serious God is when he says, “the wages of sin is death.” If you were to take a loaded pistol and put it to your head…then pull the trigger each time you sin against God.  First of all it would only happen once, second this would be the reality of what the wages of sin is!  You ONLY get one opportunity!  Did the citizens of Sodem and Gamora get multiple opportunities?  No, God was not happy with the direction they were headed and just said, “I’m done!”  Then he utterly wiped them OFF the face of the earth.

So, what is sin really? Dictionary.com has this to say:

Sin
-noun
1. transgression of divine law: the sin of Adam.
2. any act regarded as such a transgression, especially a willful or deliberate violation of some religious or moral principle.
3. any reprehensible or regrettable action, behavior, lapse, etc.; great fault or offense: It's a sin to waste time.
–verb (used without object)
4. to commit a sinful act.
5. to offend against a principle, standard, etc.
–verb (used with object)
6. to commit or perform sinfully: He sinned his crimes without compunction.
7. to bring, drive, etc., by sinning: He sinned his soul to perdition.

It’s no wonder that we have to work so hard at sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ!  As a people we have downplayed sin to the point of near nothingness!  We would probably consider a murderer as being more guilty than a person who stole a dollar.  They are one in the same in God’s eyes!  We draw a separation in severity due to the human laws that create a punishment scale based upon the severity of the crime. God uses His own scale.  And in either case it is an act that separates us from His will; thereby, the punishment being the same for both crimes, “the wages of sin is death.”  To put it in simpler terms just pull out the word sin and replace it with anything that is not in God’s will.  The wages of murder is death…the wages of lying is death…the wages of not sharing the gospel is death…the list can go on.

God is very clear in His message.  We are not worthy to be in His presence.  He doesn’t care how we measure sin…He despises ALL of it!  “For the wages of sin is death.”  By truly understanding the meaning of this simple little phrase we can now appreciate the rest of the verse, “but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”  God gave the ultimate sacrifice for us to be forgiven!  People may say that we sacrificed animals because we (mankind) were barbaric and lacked the intelligence that we have today.  I say we no longer sacrifice animals today, because Jesus shed His blood so that ALL mankind could be saved!  At this point you need to ask yourself in this day and age of modern society…”do I find this relevant now?”  The answer MUST be a resounding YES!

If you have not accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior and would like to do so please send an email to customerservice@romanroadonline.com.  Or you can contact your local church, as they will help you as well. It's as simple as praying the sinners prayer:

Heavenly Father:
I come to you in prayer asking for the forgiveness of my Sins.  I confess with my mouth and believe with my heart that Jesus is your Son, And that he died on the Cross at Calvary that I might be forgiven and have Eternal Life in the Kingdom of Heaven.  Father, I believe that Jesus rose from the dead and I ask you right now to come in to my life and be my personal Lord and Savior. I repent of my Sins and will Worship you all the day's of my Life!. Because your word is truth, I confess with my mouth that I am Born Again and Cleansed by the Blood of Jesus!
In Jesus Name, Amen.

A Tale of Two Gods?

And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts. (Exodus 11:5)

Suddenly the LORD rained burning sulfur on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and destroyed them and the whole valley, along with all the people there and everything that grew on the land.  (Genesis 19:24,25)

"If I am a man of God," Elijah answered, "may fire come down from heaven and kill you and your men!" At once the fire of God came down and killed the officer and his men. (2Kings 1:12)

The list from the Old Testament could go on and on. We clearly see God’s power and wrath carried out. He sent the Israelites into battle with instructions to kill every male among them along with male children and women that were no longer virgins. This was a God that had a goal in mind and carried out that goal.  When nations were told to “fear the Lord” they did.  All through out the Old Testament we see examples of the power of God along with His might.  Yes we also see His love, but that isn’t really preached about from the Old Testament.  Instead we hear of the love through the New Testament.

May God, our source of peace, be with all of you. Amen.  (Romans 15:13)

For the whole Law is summed up in one commandment: "Love your neighbor as you love yourself."  (Galations 5:14)

And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God.  (Ephesians 5:2)

It is only natural that we would hear of His great love toward us throughout the New Testament because the focus is the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus.  After all that was what God intended for mankind since the beginning.  He would sacrifice His only son in order that we may be free from sin.  The gospel is built around this.

My question is this.  What disservice are we doing to ourselves and those around us by ignoring the God from the Old Testament?  There IS only ONE  God after all.  His wrath, power and might are still as relevant now as they were then.  We need to quit focusing on the “feel good gospel” and start looking at the reality of things.  The reality is this:

God is the same in the past, present and future…do not discount this!
God’s love and forgiveness were fulfilled through Jesus Christ
We have to accept that Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins
God is coming again and we will witness His wrath once again

And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.  (Revelation 19:15)

Christians wake up!  We are at war!  We can not continue to sit in our churches and “feel good” about ourselves.  We have a job to do!  Help reach people for Christ and allow Him to deliver them out of Satan’s grasp!

Selfless Prayer Challenge

This is my commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
John 15:12

We have heard these words for years.  All throughout our lives we have been taught to “love one another.” In Vacation Bible School we were taught this through skits or crafts or other means designed to reach children. Then as teens we were taught this throughout Bible studies and Sunday school lessons and by our Youth Pastors. Finally as adults we are preached to by our pastors and given Greek vocabulary lessons from the pulpit about how to love (a-ga-pe) our neighbors as Christ loved us.  We have had it beaten down upon us, but have we listened?

As Christians we kneel down and pray often (we should be anyway).  The problem is often the subject of our prayers.  “Lord Jesus bless me as I do this…help me as I do that…use me to accomplish this.”  We tend to pray as children loose in a toy store.  “Daddy, buy me this…get me that…I want…I need.”  As Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman – Hook - 1991) said, “And you mindless, inexhaustible, unstoppable, repetitive, and nagging demands: He took my toy! She hit my bear! I want a potty! I want a cookie! I want to stay up! I want, I want, I want, me, me, me, me, mine, mine, mine, mine, now, now, now!”  Ok, maybe a little over the top; but, you see the point.  It’s hard not to pray like this.  We are hurting…the economy is crashing around us…the world is such a negative place right now.  You are correct!  We all need that spiritual awakening that will help us deal with our daily needs AND help us to “love one another.”

I just finished reading The Woodcarver, And Other Stories of Faith and Inspiration, by William Kevin Stoos.  It is compiled of short stories that demonstrate how others have found the ability, patience, and love necessary to place other people ahead of themselves.  Whether it is through random acts of kindness or just silently lifting other people up in prayer we can all do our part in loving one another.  I have developed what I thought was a great relationship with God, but after reading this book I have a better grip on how to apply that love from the Holy Spirit to others.  I do offer a challenge:  Spend one week, just one week…only praying for the needs of others and nothing for yourself.  It is tough, but I have done it and rest assured it has revitalized my prayer life.  In order to help you get inspired to place others ahead of your own needs and desires The Roman Road Christian Bookstore will be offering a coupon in order to take an additional 10% OFF The Woodcarver, And Other Stories of Faith and Inspiration.  Use the coupon code “wkstoos” while in the shopping cart to take advantage of this offer by February 28, 2011.

To the author: Thank you for writing such an inspirational book and God Bless you and the church you are supporting!

It's time to rethink Lent

To many, Lent is simply a time to "give up" something that they enjoy. They see it as a seemingly long purposeless time of self-denial. But A Clearing Season rebuffs that notion looking at Lent from a new perspective.

Cities across the world celebrate the day-before with colorful parades and over-the-top parties. Then Wednesday arrives ? Sigh. Lent. has. begun.
You hear about devout friends giving up seemingly innocent things in life (like chocolate) or stressing out to live a more perfect life during six grueling weeks ? for reasons you don't completely understand. Sermons about penitence are preached, and guilt soaks the congregation.

Sound like a good time?! It's time to rethink Lent.

Or at least see it for the positive opportunity it offers. It's spring-cleaning for the soul! Lent offers you time to pause, consider, and renew your relationship with God ? an altogether hopeful (not dreary) experience.

"To arrive at newness of life, we first name parts of our lives that are shrouded in darkness," writes Parsons. "To put it very dramatically,? your first order of business is to break your heart for God. We walk through some muck so that we can leave it behind and find Easter joy beyond?. With God's help we will clear the darkness away and begin to experience greater joy and newness of life."

Sure, there's work to be done during Lent, but it's the gentle, gradual work of opening one's heart and mind to grace. A Clearing Space will move you week by week from "wilderness to holy ground," using a personal tone that will stir and challenge personal reflection.

Parsons includes exercises for small groups, as well as questions at the end of each chapter for individual reflection. Also included is an appendix of spiritual practices for Lent you may not have considered before.
