Winds of Change

I was sitting in a local restaurant located by the bay.  I was just watching the seagulls fly around and watching the boats go in and out of the channel when I saw a particular boat go by.  It was a fairly small sail boat that only had one mast with a larger sail in the front of the mast and a smaller one behind.  The thing that made it different was the flag.  It wasn’t the US flag or the Texas flag or a professional or college sports team flag.  It had the Jolly Roger hoisted.  Almost two hundred years ago that flag would strike fear into a person’s heart, but now it’s just a novelty for a rich person to dress their boat up so people say, “ha, look at that.”  Wow how times have changed!

Watching that boat drift by gave me time to pause and think about the word of God.

Mal 3:6  "I am the LORD, and I do not change.”

The world moves too fast now.  We have to constantly undergo change in some way.  I often laugh at business emails in the morning that notify me of a change in policy only to have a new email sent out in the afternoon with yet another change to the same policy.  I have also worked for a restaurant in years past that literally changed their core menu five times in one week.  We have built our lives to accept this kind of change by carrying phones that will allow us to be connected to the change, by constantly checking emails, etc.  As Christians in this fast paced world we have to ask ourselves, “am I just a blur in the action around me or am I willing to stand out stand firm and be consistent just as Christ would do?”  Hopefully, we can stand consistent in this world, because in this chaotic world someone has to be the beacon of light.

Eph 5:8, 9  You yourselves used to be in the darkness, but since you have become the Lord's people, you are in the light. So you must live like people who belong to the light, for it is the light that brings a rich harvest of every kind of goodness, righteousness, and truth.

If a lighthouse changed locations constantly then ships would get confused and run aground.  The same goes for us.  If we change values and convictions constantly then we cause others around us to fail and run aground.  Our consistency will cause others to want what we have…that personal relationship with Christ!  God never changes!  What about you?

Christ wants us to be in the world not of the world.  This is hard to do without a growing relationship with Him.  Please check out The Roman Road Christian Bookstore for the bible study guide Lifestyle Priorities: Living with Purpose in a Fast-Paced World by John White.
